Dear
Respected Political Leaders,
Thank
you for the time and consideration you dedicate to issues that affect our
families. I am writing today regarding the Reauthorization of the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) - H.R. 1350.
I
am an extremely grateful, yet concerned grandmother and guardian of a
child with very special needs. My grandson will be 7 years old next month.
He has several conditions including a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD-NOS),
Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Speech and Language Delays, Fine Motor
Delays, Social Delays, and difficulties with Visual-Spatial Processing.
A
couple years back, the rest of our IEP team was considering placing him
outside of his home school and our district into a self contained facility
for behavioral disordered children.
However,
thanks to the awesome rights currently protecting our children, I was able
to convince the rest of the team to reconsider. I couldn't have been an
effective advocate without our clear and strong parent and child rights.
When the team re-convened, they quickly changed their decision.
My
grandson is currently in the Least Restrictive Environment possible…he
is at his home school in a multi-age/multi needs classroom with an
aid…his teachers and school therapist all agree he had such a successful
year he will be mainstreamed for one-two subjects next year!
I’m
so ecstatic with his overall success we built a website For Children With
Special Needs (www.fcwsn.com). I’m also serving on our school
district’s web development team focusing my efforts on Special
Education.
But,
I feel the rug being pulled from beneath us as I read all the concerns
over the proposed Reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA) - H.R.1350.
I
understand the current way may be cumbersome at times for the adults
involved…but IDEA keeps us all on our toes for the child(ren)'s short
and long term goals and progress…it also encourages communication and
accountability between parents and providers.
My
mom had a saying..."without clear rules and time constraints some
will stray, some will lay, and some will nay"...we can't afford to
let young fruitful minds go unnourished and unfocused as adults decide
whether or not it's timely or appropriate to meet regarding the needs of
our children.
Please
consider the very special needs of our very special children before
proceeding with the Reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA) - H.R. 1350.
Thank
you! Name
