Autism (also referred to as autistic disorder) is one of the five
pervasive developmental disorders described in the diagnostic manual
published by the American Psychiatric Association. Autism is characterized
by significant difficulties with social interaction, communication and
patterns of behavior described as restricted, repetitive and stereotypic.
Autism is associated with delays evident before the age of 3 years in
social interaction, language as social communication and symbolic or
imaginative play.
