Fears
Some of our kids fear the worst possible outcome in most
situations. They may ask "if I fall down, will I get dead?" When
your child brings their fears to you, never dismiss them.
| Don't say |
Instead... |
| That's silly or that
can't/won't happen |
Ask what they are afraid
of falling from and explain what could happen...i.e: "if you
fell with your bike you might get a cut...but, Nana will help you
clean it and put a clean bandage on it and it will get all
better". |
| Why do you worry so much |
I know sometimes it can
be scary when you don't know what can happen...I always want you
to tell me if you're worried or scared so we can talk about it. |
| I don't know what to
tell you |
Put your child's
thinking cap on and imagine all their possible fears. Be prepared
to discuss how you will protect them, or they could protect
themselves in any situation. |
Unfortunately, there are some real life threatening possibilities
out there. It's just a matter of time before your child hears about them.
Be prepared to discuss them with your child.
